Scarification is sometimes used by people who received scars they do not like, for example from a car accident. It can be used as method for that person to change those scars they currently have into something more pleasing or that helps them overcome the memory associated with the scar. People who might have once self-harmed may also use scarification to integrate the prior marks into a more pleasing form to celebrate their overcoming once hurting themselves.
